This week’s episode of the podcast offers a glimpse into the sustainable aviation fuel technological frontier.

Carmen Murer is the Head of Corporate Communications at Synhelion, a Swiss startup that spun-off ETH Zurich to develop synthetic sustainable aviation fuels by using sunlight, water and carbon (either from the atmosphere or from an already emitting source) as raw materials.

This is still an experimental technology, yet, it is promising enough to have garnered the support of Lufthansa Group and Zurich airport, among others. In fact, Switzerland’s main airport has already committed to buy the first batch of Synhelion’s “solar fuel”, which may already become available within a couple of years.

From there, the potential is immense, since synthetic sustainable fuels may offer one of the most direct ways to lower the carbon footprint of commercial aviation, while still keeping most of today’s infrastructure and equipment.
