A batch of flight reviews, Spanish SAF and more (The Allplane Newsletter #151)

Here is the week at a glance in sustainable aviation and in the broader commercial aviation sector:

Electric Aviation

H55, a Swiss electric aviation startup, is demonstrating its propulsion technology with a tour of Switzerland ahead of the aeroFriedrichshafen later this month. VIDEO.

The founder of H55, André Borschberg was one of the first guests of the Allplane Podcast, well before sustainable aviation became mainstream!

Advanced Air mobility

Joby has shared a video showing how it is building several aircraft at its California factory. WATCH.

AutoFlight says it has delivered the first Prosperity eVTOL to a customer in Japan. This aircraft is not yet certified in Japan, though!

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

Spanish energy company Repsol has started production at its Cartagena biofuels plant, which has a capacity of 250,000 tons per year with organic feedstocks and waste, although not all of it is SAF (it produces biodiesel too). READ.

And another SAF project in Spain, this one, backed by renewable energy company Solarig, will produce 60,000 tons per year near the town of Soria. The plant will use two different pathways to obtain SAF: gas-to-liquid (GtL) using biogas from local farm waste and power-to-liquid (PtL).

Hydrogen Aviation

Hypersonic startup Destinus has shared some details of what it claims is the first private commercial hydrogen test site in Europe, located in Payerne, Switzerland. To learn more about Destinus, check the podcast episode we did with its founder!

The ALRIGH2T EU Project has launched with the goal of research the use of swappable liquid hydrogen fuel tanks on aircraft.

Other sustainable aviation news

Chinese aerospace company AVIC has successfully flown the AS700 airship. Interesting to see China also experimenting with the comeback of airships!

What else in aviation?

Three recent flight reviews of three very different airlines and products:

And Turkish Airlines keeps expanding its American footprint, this time with the launch of its 14th US destination, Denver.

Radian Aerospace, a startup designing a launch vehicle for low orbit space applications, has updated the design of is RadianOne vehicle and has a new website.

The manufacturer of amphibious recreational two-seater aircraft ICON has filed for bankruptcy. Production may go on if it manages to find a buyer, though. The ICON A5 is a really cool aircraft that I featured a few years ago on this CNN piece. I really hope it makes it through!

Southwind Airlines, an airline created in the spring of 2022 to facilitate the flow of Russian tourists to Turkey, has been banned from the EU…because of its Russian links.
