On CNN: the fascinating story of the Carvair air car ferry

Believe it or not, once upon a time, travelling by air with your own car was a thing!

This article I’ve written for CNN gave me the chance to research the very peculiar concept of the air car ferry, which was popular in the 1950s and 1960s, before changes in the technology and economics of sea and air travel rendered it obsolete.

One of the aircraft that excelled at the task of carrying cars by air (particularly across the English Channel) was the ATL-98 Carvair, a DC-4 specially converted for this purpose.

Twenty-one Carvairs were ultimately built, with some remaining active as freighters until at least 2007!

Check out the story of this fascinating and rather unique aircraft, the ATL-98 Carvair!
